Transplant recipients celebrate a new lease on life

Post Bulletin | Jeff Hansel
About 400 people gathered in Saturday's cooler temperatures for a Mayo Clinic picnic to celebrate organ donation.

Each person at the Celebration of Life picnic had a slightly different perspective.

Judith Johnson, of Dexter, said she has had two kidney transplants in 19 years. Before her first transplant, she was tired and struggled to participate in everyday activities.

"Now I can do stuff," she said. Her daughter was her donor for the second transplant. She told her mother "when you carried me, my kidney was inside you. Now my kidney is back inside your body."

"I thought that was kind of neat," Johnson said.

Scott Geldmeyer, of Niagara, Wis., visited Rochester for appointments for his kids who were ages 3, 3, 5 and 10 when he got a heart transplant on Sept. 24, 2010.
