World's smallest liver transplant patient Lottie Bryon-Edmond to mark first birthday as charity song launched

Birmingham Mail | Emma McKinney

SHE was the baby who captured the hearts of the Midlands as she fought for life in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

And even when tiny Lottie Bryon-Edmond underwent a crucial liver transplant, her landmark first birthday seemed a distant dream for her frantic parents Julie and Chris.

But that once far-off date will arrive on Friday – to the couple’s delight.

Chris, a 48-year-old financial adviser, said: “From the minute she was born we questioned whether she would survive but she’s really feisty and was not going to let her illness defeat her.

“Her first birthday will be an enormous milestone and it will be an incredibly emotional day.”

Lottie became the smallest baby in the world to successfully undergo a life-saving liver transplant at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

It followed a tense wait for a donor organ after she was born seven weeks early on July 6 last year, weighing just 4lb 1oz.

She suffered neonatal haemochromatosis, which caused toxic levels of iron to accumulate in her liver as she developed in the womb.

Aged five weeks, she was placed at the top of Britain’s super-urgent transplant list and given, at most, a month to survive.
