The day of Kathryn Ritz’s wedding rehearsal, her mother-in-law to-be handed her a letter.
Kathryn, these four decades later, still tears up as she recalls those words from Betty Ritz, words that welcomed her into the family with love, words of encouragement and of wisdom for the future challenges of marriage.
“I pulled that letter out from time to time,” said Kathryn. “She was inspirational. She showed love and acceptance.” Kathryn also thought Betty should have written a book about how to be a good mother-in-law. “She was my best advocate.”
Son Bill Ritz recalled a childhood filled with positive reinforcement. “She was an affirming person, always building people up,” he said.
One of five children, Betty was born into the entrepreneurial Murray family and started her work life in the family’s restaurant in downtown New Hamburg. The family later operated Murray’s Food Market where she worked as a cashier for more than 30 years until, at age 50, she opened her own business, The Stationary Store, attached to her husband Ernie’s family business, Ritz Printing.
