Mother, baby doing well after natural birth at Queen’s Medical Center
History was made in Hawaii after a liver transplant patient gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
She is all of a week old. At 7-pounds-6-ounces and 20-inches-long, Alexandria Chee is a bit of a miracle baby in her parents’ eyes. Their doctor said, across the country, there are only about 25 births a year to liver transplant patients.
Sarah Chee is the first patient to have both her organ transplant and birth of her child in Hawaii. The transplant took place three years ago at the now defunct Hawaii Medical Center.
"I wouldn't be here it wasn't for organ donation. I wouldn't be sitting here to have this opportunity," said Chee.
The Chees, who have another 17-year-old daughter, were anxious to expand their family and when they got the go-ahead from their doctor they opted for fertility treatments.
"We didn't want to wait because we are both older so we opted for that route," Chee said.
