Organ recipient Grace Kobold, left, listens as Joan Crowley talks about her son Jason Crowley who donated his organs after a car accident. The Registry of Motor Vehicles hosted a press event to promote organ donations. SOUTH YARMOUTH — Joan Crowley of Sandwich first started spreading the word about the importance of organ donation in memory of her son Jason.
The 26-year-old was killed 10 years ago this summer after being struck by a minivan while crossing the street in Seattle, where he was working as a teacher.
"He was a happy, healthy young man" in the best shape of his life, Crowley said during Donate Life Day at the state Registry of Motor Vehicles office in South Yarmouth on Friday.
Jason's head struck the minivan windshield hard. Emergency room doctors determined immediately that he was brain-dead and put him on a respirator, which is how Joan and husband Tom Crowley and son Adam found him when they arrived at Harborview Medical Center from their home at the time in Pepperell.
Knowing of Jason's wish to be an organ donor, the Crowleys authorized the removal of his organs on Aug. 2, 2002.
His heart, liver and pancreas all were successfully transplanted to individuals in need of lifesaving organs, Crowley said.
