Five years ago my daughter picked up her driver's license - you know, the official one that made it OK for her to drive without my supervision. It scared me to pieces and even though it's been five years, I still get nervous when I know she is on the road.
But on that day, my daughter taught me a lesson. Without hesitation, she made known her decision to be an organ donor. I remember thinking how mature and unselfish she was.
When her dad was home, we would often talk about organ donors and the things that were necessary from a emergency rescue standpoint to make sure those organs were protected in order to be used to save the lives of others. Still, I never signed up. At some point along the way I got it in my head that if it was marked on my license that I was an organ donor and I wasn't in good shape at the scene of an accident they wouldn't work hard to keep me alive.
I know - how many ways can you spell STUPID. Danny had tried to explain to me that my thoughts were all wrong but it didn't matter how heated the discussion became, I wasn't going to believe him.
