Groups reach out for organ donors

Fifteen years ago, a national registry for organ donors listed about 30,000 people who were in need of a donation. Today, that number has skyrocketed, as more than 115,000 people wait for an organ every day.

In North Carolina alone, about 3,500 people need an organ donation.

Donor advocates, like Lexington native Theresa Richardson, say the need is real and that everyone can help make a change.

Richardson, a graduate of North Davidson High School, said her life changed when her youngest son, Jonny, was involved in a tragic car accident in October 2008. Johnny, who Richardson said was full of life and loved sports and music, sustained massive head injuries.

After doctors delivered news that Jonny would never recuperate Richardson's family made the decision to donate Jonny's organs to Life Share of the Carolinas and Donate Life North Carolina.
