Hillsborough mom finally gets new kidney

NBC17

A Hillsborough mother, who sought help through Facebook to get a new kidney, finally got the transplant she needed.

Shari Vasello, 49, suffers from a genetic condition known as Polycystic Kidney Disease, a disorder in which cysts form in the kidneys, causing them to become enlarged. Her kidneys function at about 20 percent. There is no cure, and her only options are dialysis or a transplant.

Vasello and her husband Doug learned Thursday night she would get a cadaver kidney through the UNOS program of Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Friday, she had the surgery.

The wife and mother had been on Duke University Hospital’s transplant list since July 2009 and had an expected wait time of five to seven years.
