A year after his wife Niki’s death, it’s still hard for Kevin Helmer not to say “we” when he talks about her and the fundraiser in her honor to raise awareness for organ donation.
The couple — Kevin, 55, and Niki, 37 at the time of her death — met while earning their bachelor’s degrees in West Palm Beach, Florida, about 11 years ago. After several years of dating, they were married. And eventually Helmer’s job with the United States Postal Service brought the couple to Elmhurst. A year after her death, this Aug. 11, Helmer is hosting a fundraiser for the organ donation organization Gift of Hope at the Itasca Country Club, 400 E. Orchard St., Itasca.
Registration for the golf outing begins at 11:30 a.m. There will also be a dinner and auctions that evening for both golfers and anyone else who wants to attend, he said.
