
Celebrating a 20th anniversary of any kind is a big deal, especially in the transplant world. Today, 28-year-old Bryanna Warren of Edwardsville, Ill., is celebrating that very milestone – the 20th anniversary of her liver transplant.
Bryanna suffered from biliary atresia, a condition present from birth where the bile ducts inside or outside the liver don’t have normal openings. Bile becomes trapped in the liver, causing jaundice and cirrhosis. Without surgery, the condition may cause death. In fact, Bryanna says doctors told her parents every year was going to be her last. Luckily, she received a kidney transplant when she was eight.
“It’s hard to remember anything clearly before then,” says Bryanna. “It almost feels like I wasn’t born until my transplant.”
