For most transplant recipients, the action of organ donation is more than an act of kindness. It is the gift of time and ability to go back to the lives they left behind because of illness, or sometimes it is a start down a new path. Larry Rafes lead a life full of adventure and energy until he was diagnosed with kidney disease. As the diseased progressed, Rafes had no choice but to go on dialysis while he waited for a life saving kidney transplant. After receiving two phone calls of potential donations that did not come to fruition, Larry received his new kidney in December 2010.
Because of his kidney transplant, Larry has been able to resume one of his favorite activities, kayaking. For over a decade, Larry has navigated the Lehigh River, and has severed as chairman of the Lehigh River Sojourn. Blending his passion for adventure with his gratitude to donation, Larry will be setting off on a 200 mile plus kayaking journey starting Friday August 17 to Sunday August 26.
