UTICA, N.Y. - Every 14 minutes another name is added to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) list of those waiting for a heart transplant. In all, more than 114,000 patients throughout the United States are waiting for a life saving surgery.
In 1992, John Weakley, an employee and volunteer at Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare (FSLH), found his name on the UNOS waiting list after suffering two heart attacks before the age of 55. He waited four months and on August 9, 1992, he received a heart thanks to the kindness and generosity of a family who had lost a loved one.
Twenty years later, he continues to celebrate life with his donor heart.
The significance of the gift he received was not lost on Weakley.
“A family had just lost a loved one,” he said. “However, they were able to think of helping someone else during that difficult time.”
