Organ donation: the sad facts - Australia

Dr Peter Saul is the man entrusted with the important, and somewhat unenviable, task of talking to families at John Hunter Hospital about the possibility of their recently deceased loved one’s organs being donated.
The hospital medical director for organ and tissue donation must be doing something right, given that John Hunter collects more organs for donation than most hospitals.

John Hunter Hospital has, for the past five years, been the highest donating hospital in NSW, with 68 donors recorded over that period. The next highest hospital had 39 donors. John Hunter Hospital is recognised as one of the leading organ donation hospitals in Australia in terms of collecting organs for transplant. Kidney transplants are performed here, but not heart, liver, lung or pancreas transplants.

Dr Saul says organ donation in Australia is a good news story – but it could be much better.
