Transplant Patient To Throw Out First Pitch

CBS Connecticut

Three months ago, 24-year-old Colby Salerno was continuing his wait for a heart transplant at Hartford Hospital and writing about his experience online in his blog “Tales from the Tenth Floor.” Saturday, he’ll be at Yankee Stadium, where he’ll throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Yankees-Red Sox game

The Cheshire resident underwent heart transplant surgery May 29, after waiting 166 days for the organ transplant surgery needed to save his life. He wrote the blog to share his story and to highlight the need for organ transplants.

During Salerno’s hospitalization, he got a call from Yankees Manager Joe Girardi, who asked if the team could do anything for him. His response was that the team could promote organ donation to fans. Saturday’s game will be dedicated to organ donation. He’s taking one of his doctors, two nurses and another transplant patient with him.
