Joann Meyers' daughter was so excited to be starting college at Eastern Connecticut State University.
A shy girl, Kym dreamed of becoming a social worker so that she could help children in need. The first semester went well, but then Joann noticed alarming differences in her daughter.
"She came home from spring break and she had yellowish skin. Her eyes were yellow. Her skin was yellow."
Kym was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver, which, in her case, was caused by previously undetected autoimmune hepatitis and celiac disease. Kym was told she needed a new liver and was placed on the transplant-waiting list. Weeks passed with no matches.
Five months after this shocking ordeal began, Kym died at the age of 19. And, now her mother is on a mission to raise awareness about the dire importance of organ donation
