Ayla, 15, of Greendale, had been chronically ill with cystic fibrosis since birth but her life was transformed in January last year when she received the lung transplant that saved her life.

"It was really amazing and really shocking because I didn't think I was going to win and even to be nominated was really great," Ayla said. "I remember before the transplant I couldn't even go anywhere with my friends or even walk without coughing, but now I'm always out with my friends and I am able to keep up, which is great."

Ayla said she relied on family and friends to help her through her illness.
