JUBILANT athletes who battled back from lifesaving organ transplants to represent the Royal Berkshire Hospital at a flagship national sports tournament are celebrating a record-breaking medal haul.

Members of the Reading hospital's 22-strong British Transplant Games team received a heroes' welcome from medical staff last Thursday when they showed off the 30 medals they won at the four-day contest held at Medway in Kent.

More than 700 athletes completed in this year's event, organised by Transplant Sport UK, representing hospitals which carried out their operations in a range of sports including track, field and swimming events from August 23-26. The Royal Berks team clinched eight golds, 10 silvers and 12 bronze - their best ever haul.

Russell Simpkins, from All Hallows Road, Caversham, won gold in archery and bronzes in ten-pin bowling and the 200m sprint for runners between 60 and 69..
