Katherine Collao, a young mother from Santiago, is recovering after an unusual operation Monday, where she underwent a cesarean section and a liver transplant in the same surgery.
The 27-year-old contracted hepatitis while 27 weeks pregnant and required a liver transplant to live. However, due to her advanced pregnancy, the procedure was incredibly complicated and a six-hour operation to first prematurely deliver her son, Emilio, was necessary before transplanting the liver.
A liver was flown from the southern city of Puerto Montt to the Universidad Católica Clinical Hospital in Santiago on Monday for the surgery, which started at 10 p.m. and lasted until 4 a.m. Tuesday.
