
The annual National Kidney Foundation Surf Festival in Cocoa Beach kicked off this weekend without founder Richard Salick, who died almost two months ago.
A well-known surfing competition continues Sunday in Cocoa Beach.
It’s the National Kidney Foundation Surf Festival, held every Labor Day Weekend, near the Cocoa Beach Pier, and it's the first time the event is being held without one of its founders.
“Richard was so well loved,” said Phil Salick.
Surfing legend Richard Salick died July 2 from health complications.
He underwent three kidney transplants during his life.
He and his twin brother Phil started the surfing competition more than three decades ago to shore up money for those battling kidney disease.
Salick made sure it continues.
“We were as close as we could get and to lose him a month and half ago is absolutely unbearable,” Salick said.
