Teeing off for HOPE - Canada

Lacombe Globe | Cayley Dobie

The second annual charity golf tournament in support of the University of Alberta’s Human Organ and Exchange Program (HOPE) tees off Sept. 7 at the Gull Lake Golf Course.

“What we’re doing is done more to create an awareness that donations are needed and people should be signing their donor cards and discussing their wishes in the event of their death,” said Murray McRae, event organizer for the tournament.

McRae, who is also the recipient of organ donation—he had a cornea transplant at the beginning of August—hopes this event will bring the issue to the forefront of people’s minds.

“The clinic where I had my surgery done told me there was a need for some kind of political action,” said McRae. “Organ transplants are kind of in that same mileu, where it’s difficult for people to actually have discussions about it.”

By hosting a charity event that deals directly with the subject of organ donation, it should get people talking about the issue and even bring people out of the woodwork who need help, said McRae.
