Woman helps raise special flag at Comanche Memorial

Shelley Pollock can tell you firsthand how much difference a person can make when he decides to become an organ donor or allow a relative to become one.

Pollock, who helped hoist the "Donate Life" flag over Comanche County Memorial Hospital Tuesday in commemoration of National Donate Life Month, recalled what a double lung transplant meant to her husband Dennis and to her.

Dennis Pollock was diagnosed with Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic form of emphysema. As his health began failing, she said, he began seeking a transplant, first being listed in St. Louis, Mo., and then Dallas. After several years of waiting, and seeing his health continue to decline, he finally "received his precious gift of a second life," one that lasted until October 2010.
