Team Maryland athlete Mike Gahagan tells us his incredible story including two kidney transplants and the amazing people who became his heroes:

"I am always quite uncomfortable when people tell me how courageous I am for having and living with a kidney transplant. The fact is, I am not that courageous at all, and perhaps even somewhat cowardly and selfish in how I dealt with my renal failure and ultimate transplant.

My kidney failure was diagnosed during routine pre-op testing for hernia surgery. As a result, I selected to receive peritoneal dialysis, an alternative to hemodialysis, for the next two years because it allowed me to continue working. I performed this type of dialysis seven nights a week beginning in the early evening and ending at daybreak.
