Memorial plaque unveiled for Charles Ruffing at Walkway

Charles Ruffing was memorialized by friends and family at the Walkway Over the Hudson’s east approach Friday.

An unveiling ceremony was hosted by the Walkway Over the Hudson organization.

The Ruffing family set up a memorial fund in honor of Charles Ruffing and chose to install an inscribed stainless steel plaque in his memory. The family invited members from the Walkway organization, LiveOnNY, as well as two individuals and their families who received organ transplants from Ruffing to celebrate his life. After the ceremony that paid tribute to Ruffing’s “giving spirit,” the stainless steel bench plaque on an ipe wood bench was unveiled with the inscription “Charles Ruffing (1964-2015) Forever Giving.”

“He was a kind, joyful, sensitive, helpful and giving person,” his mother Alice Ruffing said via email. “Through all of his struggles, he never lost his hope or positive attitude towards life. After cutbacks at IBM, he volunteered at the former Saint Francis Hospital and on his breaks he would walk to the Walkway Over the Hudson. Continue reading
