The girlfriend of a Missouri man who was killed by a tire in a freak accident earlier this week has revealed that in his last moments, her boyfriend’s first instinct was to shield her from danger.

Nicholas Melvin, 23, and Laura Bass, 20, were driving on eastbound Interstate 70 at around 9.45pm Monday on their way home from a restaurant when a tire flew off a trailer traveling in the opposite direction.

The wheel bounced over a concrete divider, smashed through Melvin's windshield and struck him in the head before landing in his girlfriend’s lap.

Laura Bass says she was resting her head on her boyfriend's shoulder when the tire came crashing through the window and knocked him out.

According to the 20-year-old, she felt Melvin tighten his grip on her in an attempt to protect her. But he could not protect himself, reported Kansas city Star. Continue reading
