WALNUT CREEK -- The families of Matthew Ouimet and Isabel "Izzy" Martin -- two East Bay children who were saved by organ transplants -- gave back on Saturday, joining hundreds of others at Heather Farm Park to raise money and awareness about organ and tissue donations.
Nearly 600 people ran there in the annual Donate Life Run/Walk, raising more than $75,000, event organizers said.
Matthew Ouimet knows firsthand how organ donations can save lives. The Antioch 4-year-old is alive today because he received a kidney and liver transplant when he was 2. Around two years later, he now can swim and run, and he took part in his first race in the morning sun on Saturday.
Matthew -- wearing a T-shirt that read "This is what a transplant patient looks like" -- said he held his own in the race. "You know what?" he said. "I passed a lot of people." Continue reading
