Eaton Rapids teen rappels off 27-story building in honor of local boy

EATON RAPIDS - Before stepping backwards off the edge of the Wit Hotel’s roof on Sunday, Izabella Wood took in the view of downtown Chicago from the top of the 27-story building.

She was, for the record, strapped into a rappelling harness.

“You’re dangling off the top of the building,” she said. “If you look to the left you see the river that runs through Chicago. I could hear my family shouting from the bottom. I just thought, ‘Yes. I’m doing this.”

And down she went.

Wood, 18, of Eaton Rapids, reached the ground in eight minutes and 40 seconds. A cheering crowd was waiting. It was over fast but it took her a year to raise $1,000 for the “Skyline Plunge.”

Wood spent those 365 days collecting 10,000 bottles and cans, turning all of them in for change - enough for a $1,000 donation to the Respiratory Health Association. The money will pay for lung disease research, advocacy and education.

The cause means something to Wood because she knows Bailey Boatman. Continue reading
