ERIE, Pa. -- The first human kidney transplant ever performed in northwestern Pennsylvania is scheduled to take place later this month.
Surgeons at UPMC Hamot will perform the transplant, pending approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The Erie hospital's transplant program has already been approved by the United Network for Organ Sharing.
"We have identified the first patient to have the surgery, and the date is tentatively scheduled," said David Gibbons, Hamot's chief operating officer. Gibbons asked that the surgery date not be published.
Hamot has been working to start a transplant program since it joined UPMC in 2011. Local patients have had to travel to Pittsburgh, Cleveland or other large cities for transplants. Continue reading
