Groups Look at Tissue Donation Outside Hospitals

FERNLEY, NV - If you want to be an organ donor, you can indicate that on your driver's license. Typically, hospital personnel will notify an organ donor network at the time of your death. What if death occurs outside a hospital? There is no mechanism to have your final wishes fulfilled. But there is a move to change that.

Felicia Hill's daughter Audrey died three days after her birth. Devastated, Felicia nevertheless decided to donate her baby's organs which would eventually save two people.

“I am very excited and very proud of my daughter Audrey and what she gave for two other people,” says Felicia.

That's how it is supposed to work, especially with organs like hearts and kidneys, where surgeons have a short amount of time to retrieve them for other sick patients. Continue reading
