New Heart, New Life For Simsbury Teen

BOSTON — Simsbury High School junior Danny Deitz has a new heart beating inside him, the result of a seven-hour transplant surgery performed late Thursday night into early Friday morning at Boston Children's Hospital.

His father, Terry Deitz, said Friday afternoon that Danny remained unconscious and on a ventilator. Doctors will awaken him Saturday if his vital signs support such a decision. Danny was in the operating room from about 9:45 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday and was in intensive care Friday.

Terry Deitz said he has received encouraging feedback from doctors but he also wanted to stress that Danny's surgery and recovery is a complicated and delicate process. The hope is for Danny to spend about two weeks in the hospital before returning home.

"This has been an education I would not want to wish on anybody," Terry Deitz said. "The doctors say he's doing great. The new heart is pumping really well and we're blessed to have it. But we don't want to jump the gun." Continue reading
