Organ donors praised for 'life-saving' decisions

An art installation was unveiled on Tuesday to honour organ donors at the South West Hospital in Enniskillen.

Within the Western Health Trust, there were 11 organ donations last year, with the organs going to 31 people.

The occasion comes almost two weeks after the then Health Minister Simon Hamilton said he was looking at a ‘soft opt-out’ system for Northern Ireland when it comes to organ donation.

The Public Health Agency recently published research showing that 61% of Northern Irish people support making organ donation easier.

Mother-of-two Lee Lyons from Carrickmore, Co Tyrone, received a double transplant, having suffered from diabetes since she was eight years old.

The condition meant that her kidneys began to fail her after the birth of her first baby six years ago.

It was while she was on the transplant waiting list that Lee became pregnant with her second daughter Leya.

Lee says she faced one of the toughest decisions of her life.
