LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A trip down memory lane. Paul Mattingly has always loved to run. Running cross country for the University of Louisville more than 30 years ago, after that local races like the Mini-Marathon.
For the past two years a different kind of race for Paul, this one against time.
Paul suffers from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis or IPF.
The once robust Navy man, strapped to oxygen earlier this year with his lungs giving out.
Paul’s wife, Julie, knew without a double lung transplant, without that call, time was running out.
Paul’s daughter, Jenny, who pregnant at the time was afraid that he wouldn't live to see his first grandchild.
Then in May, a miracle phone call for Paul as he rushed into surgery for his transplant. 14 hours to receive those new lungs. Paul with a second chance at life, another family they knew mourning a loss. Continue reading
