The recipient of a double-lung transplant is thanking a Valley hospital for saving his life twice and helping him to marry his wife.
Jaken Casper has been in and out of hospitals his whole life. He has cystic fibrosis, and it's been a long battle. He visited St. Joseph's Hospital Wednesday for a check-up following a life-saving procedure. Three years ago, his health took a turn for the worse, and he needed a double-lung transplant. It was then that doctors at St. Joseph's saved his life for the first time.
Unfortunately, Casper's body rejected the lungs, and he would need a second transplant.
"They're not very common because it is a very difficult operation to perform," said Dr. Jasmine Huang, a surgeon at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Casper knew he might run out of time, so he prayed for a pair of donor lungs and asked to see a chaplain.
"I thought in the hospital, 'Well, if I'm not going to make it I at least want to get married,'" Casper said. Continue reading
