ELBA, AL (WSFA) - A 26-year-old woman in Elba is on the medical waiting list for a major transplant, and you might be able to help her.
Rebecca Thompson was born with Short Bowel Syndrome, also known as SBS. The condition simply means there is a dysfunction with Thompson's digestive system.
It's estimated around 3,500 adults in the United States have SBS as well as 9,000 children, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.
The condition can sometimes be treated with medications, but Thompson says she will need a liver, pancreas and intestines transplant.
"It just seems to be getting harder and more pain. It's getting harder every day. They're saying hopefully once I get new organs they will be able to work," Thompson said.
This type transplant will cost around $750,000, Thompson said. Continue reading
