Golf event to encourage organ donor registry

The Save A Life Group will host a golf tournament on Oct. 12, but the event is not just about playing golf. The Save a Life Classic at Trump National Golf Club – Charlotte will raise money for organ donation awareness and education.

Many who are participating in the tournament have either received an organ or donated ones themselves.

“I really wanted to try to pay it forward because I was saved by a donor,” said Gary Simmons, who received a liver in 2013 and is founder and chairman of Save A Life Group.

In December 2008, he had surgery to replace his right knee and had been given pain killers. What he didn't know was that he had a genetic condition that was already affecting his liver, and those pain killers were damaging it further.

Not long after the surgery, he passed out in church.

He was rushed to the emergency room, and that is where he learned about the genetic condition and the state of his liver. It was more than four years before he received a liver donation that helped save his life. Continue reading
