Gift of Hope’s “Lasting Legacy” campaign

An organ procurement organization is working to familiarize African-Americans with the donation process.

Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, which services Illinois and northwest Indiana, launched the “Lasting Legacy” campaign to coincide with Organ Donor Month. The organization hopes to dispel myths and misconceptions about the practice.

Historically, African-Americans donate organs at a much lower rate than whites.

There is long-standing myth among many that it is not beneficial for African-Americans to donate because “doctors will prematurely declare death to procure organs” or “the system is more favorable to the ‘rich’ or ‘famous,'” according to a 2013 study published in Clinical Transplantation.
