Posthumous award for lifesaving organ donor

An organ donor from Chislehurst has been honoured posthumously, after his organs helped save the lives of others.

Roger Pearce was honoured at a ceremony at Priory Church of the Order of St John in Clerkenwell on October 5.

His wife Madeleine and daughter Diane received the award on his behalf, as hundreds of families attend ceremonies across the UK to receive the award in memory of their loved ones.

More than 1200 people are honoured by the Order of St John who donated their organs after death.

Last year, between April 2014 and March 2015, the number of deceased organ donors in the UK dropped for the first time in 11 years.

Sally Johnson, Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “The Order of St John award scheme has been running for the last two years.

“It never ceases to amaze me just how humble people are when you speak to them about having helped to save the lives of patients who were desperately ill. I have never spoken to a single person who has ever regretted their decision to donate. Continue reading
