Provincial News: DoctorsOntario Launches "Do The Do" Campaign

(October 14, 2015, Toronto, Ontario) – Dr. Douglas Mark, Interim President of DoctorsOntario (DO), announced today the launch of its first "Do the DO" campaign, which asks doctors across the province to encourage both doctors and their patients to register as organ and tissue donors.

Today is truly a historic day for Ontario's doctors and their patients," Dr. Mark said. "For the first time, DoctorsOntario is calling on its members to register themselves and reach out to their patients, families and friends and encourage them to also register as organ and tissue donors. Having watched a patient of mine die last year—after having waited for a transplant that came a little too late—I know firsthand the need is real. I made a vow not to let my patient die in vain, which is why we're launching our campaign here today.”

There are currently 1,600 people in Ontario on the waiting list for an organ transplant. And while there are approximately three million registered Ontario organ and tissue donors, less than 30 per cent of eligible Ontarians have registered their consent to donate. This is especially important because one donor can save up to eight lives. One of the goals of the "Do the DO" campaign is to double the number of registered organ and tissue donors in the province by December 31, 2016. Continue reading
