Mid-America Transplant Services has been named a recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
The prestigious award is the only presidential honor given to organizations for performance excellence. Mid-America, winning in the nonprofit category, was among four organizations that received the award this year.
Among this year's winners included Midway USA, a shooting and hunting equipment supplier based in Columbia, Mo. The firm also had won in the small business category in 2009.
St. Louis-based Mid-America Transplant was lauded for its work in driving down the cost of procuring organs for transplant patients.
The Department of Commerce notes that due to Mid-America's stand-alone organ recovery facility, procuring organs can cost less than $4,000, a steep decline from costs associated with in-hospital organ procurement. Continue reading
