Couple searches for recipient of a heart valve in 2001 from their infant
GAINESVILLE, NY – On April 24, 2001, Deb and Greg Keller, young parents of a small daughter, welcomed their second child, their son Zachary, into their lives.
"He was an amazing little boy. He was sweet...he smiled and laughed, played with his sister…and oh, how she loved him," recalled Deb.
Unfortunately, Zachary's life was cut short at the age of four months, a victim of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
At the hospital where he was rushed to, the Keller's were soon approached by the facility's director of organ procurement.
"We never hesitated for a second," recalled Greg about their decision to donate their baby's organs. "We figured that in our time of tragedy, we might be able to help another family avoid a tragedy of their own."
The Kellers would eventually learn that the only one of Zachary's organs used for transplant was a heart valve. Continue reading, VIDEO
