KNIA - KRLS | Kris Reynolds
This weekend is the National Donor Sabbath Weekend, which aims to raise awareness of organ and tissue donations that save lives.
Pella Fire Chief Doug Van Gorkom has a whole new perspective on organ and tissue donations since his wife, Susan, went through a lung transplant. Doug told KNIA/KRLS his wife was diagnosed with a disease in May 2014 that causes the lungs to break down and deteriorate.
After a visit to the University of Iowa Hospital last February, the two got a call saying there was a new set of lungs available for Susan. Thanks to a donor, Doug’s wife has recovered and is doing well.
Doug says anyone can become an organ donor when renewing their driver’s license or visiting the Iowa Donor Network website. The Van Gorkoms will help raise awareness this Sunday at Third Reformed Church. Story source
