‘Floragraph’ Honors Legacy of Montclair Woman Whose Kidney Saved a Life


The family of Betsy Niles, a Montclair mother who died after being struck by a van in March 2011, will honor her legacy on Sunday, December 6.

They will gather at the University Center ballroom of Montclair State University at 3:30 pm to put the finishing touches on a “floragraph” that will honor her on the Donate Life Rose Parade Float in the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena on New Year’s Day on New Year’s Day.

A “floragraph” of Betsy, whose kidney saved the life of Valentine Samuels, 53, of Newark, was created with seeds, flowers and other natural materials. Samuels, who received his kidney on April 1, 2011 at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, said he met Betsy’s family at NJ Sharing Network in late November. “I wanted them to know how grateful I am for the kidney and how it has changed my life,” said Samuels, a retired carpet layer. “They have given me new life.” Continue reading
