A liver for Damian: a family's fight for life

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - The Maldonado family is waiting for a liver transplant to save their 8-month-old son's life.

Damian Maldonado was born with Biliary Atresia, a rare liver disease where bile can't flow through the body so it becomes trapped and damages the liver. It affects 1 in about 18,000 babies.

Doctors performed the Kasai procedure in August hoping the procedure would stick and Damian would not need a transplant. Except, the procedure was unsuccessful.

In October 2015 the family was referred to the Children's Hospital Colorado where they learned Damian would be needing a liver transplant.

He has been on a waiting list since December and doctors believe he should receive the transplant within the next four to six weeks. Continue reading
