Mesa County deputy 'in final hours of life'

MESA COUNTY - The Palisade Fire Department says a Mesa County Sheriff's Office deputy is in his "final hours of life."

Deputy Derek Geers was shot multiple times Monday morning by a 17-year-old suspect he had detained during a weapons investigation.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office says Geers is on life support so his organs can be donated. This process could take up to 48 hours, after then, life-sustaining measures will be stopped.

Geer is a Navy veteran who has been with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office since October 2001.

He is married and has two children, ages 11 and 13.

The suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was taken into custody less than an hour after the shooting. Continue reading
