Stories From The Heart: Hannah's Heartfelt Gratefulness

Hannah Heatherington celebrated a special night as Heart Princess for the American Heart Association's Heart And Stroke Ball in 2011.

She had received medical care for her heart and several months after the event she received grim news from her doctor.

"He said my heart was operating at only 5%," she explained in a recent interview with WOWT 6 News. "I was sixteen."

Hannah immediately was placed on the transplant list at the Nebraska Medical Center. Five days later she received a phone call while she was sleeping.

"It was my nurse and she said that there was a heart available and from there I was so lucky."

She received her new heart five years ago and I spoke with her back then during her first public appearance after the transplant. Hannah expressed her gratefulness to the unknown donor and talked of her plans to one day attend college. Continue reading
