Data: Despite improvement, few South Texas residents have registered as organ donors

Despite a dramatic increase in the number of registered organ donors during the past few years, the Rio Grande Valley still lags behind other parts of Texas.

In 2013, approximately 3 to 4 percent of residents were registered organ donors, according to the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance.

About 23 percent of Valley residents have now registered, but the region still lags behind Travis County, El Paso County, Bexar County and Dallas County.

"We're doing a lot better. People understand the need of organ donors, but we are one of the lowest percentages in our state," said Edwina Garza, a community relations coordinator for the organ sharing alliance.

More than half of Travis County residents and El Paso County residents have registered as organ donors. Continue reading
