Celebrating the gift of life: Agency recognizes donors, families

Donor family members, North Mississippi Medical Center employees, Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency staff and area residents release balloons in honor of organ and tissue donors at the Donate Life event at the Tupelo hospital Tuesday morning.

TUPELO – With flowers, balloons and memories, organ and tissue donors and their families were honored for their selfless gift of life Tuesday morning.

North Mississippi Medical Center and Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency officially recognized donors and their families in a ceremony in front of the Tupelo hospital.

The medical team tries so hard to deliver good outcomes for their patients, said Tupelo neurosurgeon Dr. Louis Rosa. It’s the most difficult conversation to tell families when they couldn’t.

“In this difficult, stressful situation, these families make a beautiful gift,” Rosa said.

Those gifts take the form of transplantable organs, like the heart, lungs and kidneys, and tissue such as the cornea, bone and skin. Continue reading
