Hoosiers honored for being living kidney donors, saving a life before tragedy strikes

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind (April 14, 2016) — Nearly 100 Hoosiers were recognized for their generosity as living kidney donors Thursday. April is National Donate Life Month. We met two friends who are now connected for life after the selfless act of donating.

“I needed a kidney and he stepped up without asking, gave me a kidney,” said Paul Stouse.

Stouse went to the hospital and had no clue what was wrong until doctors told him his kidneys were functioning at a low level. Little did he know his friend Dan went to get tested right away without telling him, and he was the perfect match.

“Just how can you help. What can you do to help a friend out in a bad situation,” Dan Leggitt said.

All of the living kidney donors were recognized by IU Health’s transplant center for giving life to a family member, friend or complete stranger. Many of them say it’s a smooth process they would gladly do again. Continue reading
