London Doctor Recognized for Raising Organ Donation Awareness

A London physician is getting a gift of his own because of his work as an advocate for organ donation.

Dr. Michael Sharpe, an intensivist at LHSC’s University Hospital, is receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Trillium Gift of Life Network.

The award recognizes a physician who is a strong advocate for organ and tissue donation, mentors other hospital staff and physicians on the importance of organ donation and illustrates a dedication to advancing donation practices.

Sharpe says the hospital’s trauma centre and neurosciences program draw patients who have, unfortunately, suffered serious injuries, and are eligible for organ donation.

Over the course of his career at LHSC, Sharpe has seen significant changes in the donation process.

“What I’ve learned over the years is the beneficial impact organ donation has on donor families,” said Dr. Sharpe in a statement. “In talking to patients’ families who have donated, it’s a tremendous benefit for the grieving families. So my resolve in all of this is to ensure each and every potential organ donor’s family has had the opportunity to make the decision.” Continue reading
