Miami-Dade Fire Rescue hold organ donating awareness event


CORAL GABLES, Fla. (WSVN) -- Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and local organ donor groups hosted the first national Donate Life Blue and Green Day, Friday.

The community event took place at the University of Miami. It encouraged people to wear blue and green to raise awareness of the importance of organ donors.

"The act of organ donation symbolizes the best of humanity," said Doctor Alghidak Salama, the director of the Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency. "In the most difficult time of any family, these heroes have chose to save the lives of many, improve the lives of countless more and contribute to the advancement of medical science."

Reports say more than 120,000 people in the United States are waiting for an organ, and someone is added to the national waiting list every 12 minutes. Continue reading, VIDEO
