New transplant institute at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance will offer kidney transplants

The Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Health System will open the Renaissance Transplant Institute on Friday -- offering kidney transplants to Rio Grande Valley residents for the first time.

Doctors at the Transplant Institute urge Valley residents to register as organ donors.

Many people who need transplants wait four to six years for a donor. Some don't live long enough to receive a transplant.

"It's real hard to wait for a kidney. You never know when you're going to get the call," said Encarnacion Gonzalez, who waited six years for a transplant.

Dr. Mourad Alsabbagh said Valley residents should check with a doctor before registering to determine whether or not they suffer from diabetes or hypertension.

Both conditions could make someone ineligible to donate organs, but early diagnosis could save them from debilitating symptoms. Continue reading
